Guide

CCP or CCA: which credential do you need?

CCP is the foundation. CCA is the assessor step that builds on it. Which one you need depends on the work you plan to do, and almost everyone starts with CCP.

Start here

CCP: CMMC Certified Professional

Who it is for: consultants, IT and security staff, compliance leads, executives, and anyone who supports organizations working toward CMMC readiness, or who participates in the CMMC ecosystem and needs to understand it properly.

What it covers: why CMMC exists, the organizations and roles in the ecosystem, Level 1 and Level 2 fundamentals, the difference between Federal Contract Information and Controlled Unclassified Information, and the ethics and boundaries that apply to people who work around assessments.

Prerequisite: none. CCP is the entry point, and it is required before CCA.

Assessor step

CCA: CMMC Certified Assessor

Who it is for: CCP holders who want to do assessor work: evaluating evidence, interviewing stakeholders, documenting findings, and working inside a disciplined Level 2 assessment process.

What it covers: Level 2 assessment methodology, what counts as adequate and sufficient evidence, scoring logic, writing findings others can review, and the professional judgment assessor work demands.

Prerequisite: CCP. CCA preparation is not an entry point, because assessor work depends on the foundation vocabulary and ecosystem understanding CCP builds.

The path

From CCP to CCA, in order.

The sequence is simple. Build the foundation with CCP first: the ecosystem, the vocabulary, and Level 1 and Level 2 fundamentals. Then, if assessor work is your goal, continue to CCA, where the same terms and expectations are applied to evidence, scoring, and findings.

If you already know assessor preparation is your destination, the combined CCP + CCA pathway keeps both steps in one coordinated study plan. If you are still deciding, start with CCP alone and make the CCA call with better information.

One boundary worth knowing: completing a preparation course does not by itself grant a credential. Exams and credential decisions run through ISACA and the CMMC credentialing process, not through any training provider.
